In November 2016, a light rail proposal was produced by the West England Local Enterprise Partnership as part of a consultation. This proposal outlined a potential light rail/tram routes from the north west and eastern fringes if Bristol, a route along the A4 to Bath, and a route from Bristol centre to Bristol Airport.

In 1542, the Abbey of St Augustine, founded 400 years earlier by Robert Fitzharding, became Bristol Cathedral and the Diocese was founded. The merger of the Carlton club with Redland Park in 1888, formed the Bristol Football Club, location of the Bristol Bears. Bristol Rovers, formed in 1883, the the oldest professional football team in Bristol, was promoted back to into the football league in 2015.

The first Englishman to lead an exploration to North America was William Weston, a Bristol Merchant, in 1499. Orignially located at the Bristol Harbour, the Port of Bristol was moved to the Severn Estuary at Royal Portbury Dock and Avonmouth. Bristol has a variey of artistic and sporting venues and organisations including the Arnolfini, the Royal West of England Academy, Ashton Gate, the Memorial Stadium and Spike Island. Bristol also has two universities, the University of the West of England and the University of Bristol.

In northern Bristol another gorge, cut by the Hazel Brook which flows into the River Trym, crosses the Blaise Castle estate. The two Football League clubs, Bristol City and Bristol Rovers. Bristol City is the only club from Bristol to play in the precursor to the Premier League. In 1129, Earl Robert of Gloucester, the son of Henry I, founded St James' Priory as a Benedictine priory.

On 15 November 2012, an election for the post of Mayor of Bristol was held, an independent candidate George Ferguson won the election. Bristol's tallest building is the 12th-century St Mary Redcliffe. In the Shirehampton and St Annes archaeological finds, including flint tools believed to be between 300,000 and 126,000 years old, indicate the presence of Neanderthals in Bristol during the Middle Palaeolithic.
